Mediation in Turkey has developed rapidly over the last decade and has become an essential part of the judicial system.
The legal basis of modern mediation was established with the Law on Mediation in Civil Disputes (Law No. 6325), enacted in 2012.
Initially, mediation was designed as a voluntary and confidential alternative dispute resolution method for private law disputes.
A significant milestone occurred in 2018 when mandatory mediation was introduced for labor disputes as a precondition to filing a lawsuit.
Due to its high settlement rates and its impact on reducing court caseloads, the scope of mandatory mediation was later expanded to commercial disputes in 2019 and subsequently to certain consumer disputes.
Today, mediation plays a crucial role in promoting amicable settlements and improving the efficiency of the Turkish justice system.
